Unhappy Distillation - experiment fail

Hello people!

I tried experimenting distillation with these following tools that I bought on ebay:

I just mixed 100ml water + 100ml alcohol. I turned on my cooker, since I don't have a bunsen. Everything was fine, but after the liquid started boiling, it got pressurized and the lid flew away (together with the liquid inside).

I suppose the distillator was not releasing the pressure properly?

Thanks in advance!

Probably you were heating it too quickly ...

Either set the cooker much lower, or it might be better to use a water bath or salt water bath , put a pan on the cooker with saturated salt water in it , put the flask you want to heat half immersed in the gently boiling bath ... this will heat the alcohol solution which will start to boil off the alcohol at about 80C.. a water bath will automatically stop the distillation when most of the alcohol has come over .

Important to put 'anti bumping granules' in the flask to make the boiling gentler , small pieces of broken crockery , pottery or glass will do.

With this apparatus you can make your own vodka ... ferment sugar solution , then distill
