In some compounds (particularly between metals and non-metals) one of the parts of the compound can strip an electron (sometimes more than one) away from the other part of the compound.
This leaves one part of the compound negatively charged, and the other part positively charged.
If this compound is now dissolved in a liquid,
and an electrical field formed by placing two electrically conducting plates in the liquid,
and connecting them to an electrical power source,
then the positive part of the compound will be attracted to the negatively charged plate
and the negatively charged part of the compound will be attracted to the positively charged plate.

After some time you will find that the dissolved compound will be split
with one part covering one of the plates and the other part covering the other plate.
