Sulfuric Acid & Water ratio pH

Hi All

To be up front I am a complete novice working on a backyard chem project and I was hoping to get someone else's view on some results I got today.

I was diluting some Adelaide, AUS tap water (8-9pH) with sulphuric acid (98%).

I was shocked to see that I diluted 1part sulphuric acid to 1980parts water to get a pH read of 2-3. Does that sound right????

Thanks

one ml of conc H2SO4= 1.8 gms
1.8 gms of same =0.018 mols
0.018 mols = 0.036 mols of hydrogen ions
conc of H .0.036/1981 * 1000=0.018 mols per liter
pH =-log 0.018 =1.7

Thanks bjhopper. Much appreciated!

Does your equation take into account the relatively high pH level of the tap water used?

If not, do you think that accounts for the pH reading I got?

no. I did not make a correction.If the water has a pH of 8 I think 2 would be right.If pH is 9 it would be higher than 2.Exact cals can be made
