I am having a hard time understanding this, a bond gives 2 electrons to fill octet is what my teacher says. But i see it different, i see a bond taking a SPACE of 2 electrons but each atom connected only gets 1 electron. Let's start with BeCl2 as example: Be has 2 Valence(outer) electrons, and Cl has 7... Well when we draw the lewis structure we get Cl-Be-Cl and each Cl with 3 lone pairs. Total of 8 pairs.. Everyone says Cl has 8 electrons i say 7, they say Be has 4 i say 2.. Why is this? I see bonds(single here) as a space of 2 but giving only 1 electron.
